Laurelhurst Market

Friday November 04th

Friday night, I had dinner at Laurelhurst Market.  It is at 3155 East Burnside.  I have longed considered it the best steak house in Portland.  Having eaten at Ringside, El Gaucho,  and Morton’s, I find the prices and quality of meat make this my favorite steakhouse.

Last night was my first time in over a year.  The experience started off well with well made affordable drinks at the bar.  Paid $7.50 for a Manhattan which makes it one of the cheapest in the city.  We were initially told there was a 40 minute wait but a table was available before we received our drinks.

Once seated around 9pm, we were promptly greeted by our server.   She conveyed professionalism but lacked personality.  She was short and to the point but never rude.  I felt a little rushed, like she was ready to go home.

Our first course was Salted Cod Fritters.  This was an interesting appetizer.  The cod had been pureed and battered in corn flour, rolled into 10 small balls, then deep-fried and served with an aioli.  The dish came out promptly.  This was my first time having it and I was not impressed.  The cod was purred to the point that it didn’t really have a fish taste.  As for it being gluten-free, I did not ask.  I was not bothered by it, but would not say that it was gluten-free.  The breading was thick for such a small ball and I couldn’t help but think there was some gluten in it.  I am not a mayo fan but did dip the fritters into the aioli because it helped the favor.

For dinner I had the Steak Frites for $20.  This was a good cut of meat which the waitress explained came from the shoulder.  It was very lean but I would not have compared it to a tenderloin, like she did.  The portion was smallish to me about 6 to 7 oz but in the end I was glad that it was not monstrous.   The steak was cooked just the way I like it, medium rare. The fries were different.  It was this hard crispy outside.  It reminded me as if they had been cooked in duck fat but lacked the flavor.   The sauce was quite good.  Overall, it was the best steak frites I have had and one of the cheapest.

JC had the Bavette Steak  which is his favorite cut of meat (reminds him of home), a sirloin flap, it was served with creamed chanterelle mushrooms but was really more of a chanterelle cream sauce.  He really liked his steak so much that he did not share any of it.

With dinner, we got a side of potato and  celery root gratin.  The first time, I came to Laurelhurst Market I had a side of potato au gratin.  This gratin was not as good, but was still delicious.  The taste of celery root was strong but not off-putting.  The gratin was layered with alternating potato and celery root.

Desert was unfortunate.  I looked at the menu and saw no gluten-free options.  I asked what kind of crust the cheese cake had and it was a gram cracker crust.  We declined on dessert. When our waitress came back with the bill, I asked about what they do to accommodate gluten-free? This question caught her off guard and she replied that the menu stated what was gluten-free.  This was strange because I didn’t see anything that stated if some thing was gluten-free.   Looking at the menu online, I have checked the menu and cannot find this information.

As for the dessert the waitress replied that the deserts change often and that sometime they are not able to offer gluten-free.  I think this is unfortunate, I know that I am in a minority but many restaurants do cater to gluten-free.  There are many gluten-free friendly options and this city is full of bakeries that make excellent desserts.

This was a big disappointment as this was my favorite restaurant.  JC really liked it and wants to go back.  Being one of my favorites, I will return because I don’t want this bad experience ruin my view of the restaurant.

As a side note, I was very tired Friday night.  This may have influenced my opinion which is another reason I should return before writing this restaurant off.

St Jack’s

Friday October 28

For JC’s birthday I made reservations at St. Jack’s.  This is a French bistro with a definite Portland flair.  This is the 2nd time that I have eaten at St. Jacks.  The first time was only a few months after it opened.  Since the restaurant’s opening, it has been written up a few times and recently was written up in the Portland Monthly as one of the best new restaurants in Portland.

I would agree and if you ask JC, he now calls it his favorite restaurant.  The experience started even before we arrived.  I went to the webpage and was able to make a reservation through open table.  If you have not used this service I suggest trying it.  For a person like me who hates to talk on the phone, I was able to make a reservation on-line.  It was quick and easy.  There was a space to make note of any requests.  I wrote down that I was gluten intolerant and that there was a birthday.

The day of reservation the restaurant called to confirm my reservation.  How often does this happen? We arrived and immediately some of the best service I have had, started.  We felt special and the waiter made mention that he knew that I was gluten intolerant.  But it was what happen next that really made this a special dinner.  The waiter had made a suggestion of a unoaked whiskey, both liking Manhattans, we ordered the whiskey.  The Bartender worried about ruining the flavor of the whiskey created a special drink mixing a clear sweet vermouth than the typical dark sweet vermouth.  He then brought the drinks personally to the table and explained his concern and why he changed the drink.  There was a great explanation of the different flavors and how he felt that this was a good drink and hoped that we liked it.  I have never had anyone take that much personal interest in a drink.

The drink was quite good it had an orange flavor mixed with some floral notes.  It was a good start on what was to be a great meal.  The drinks were a little steep but they were special and I think worth it at $12 a piece.

The first course we had frog legs  en persillade for $12 frog legs.  Ye,s like people say they taste like chicken but gamier. To make the legs gluten-free they were dusted with corn starch and then lightly fried.  There was a white wine, garlic, lemon, caper reduction over the legs and served on a bed of frisee.  The frog legs were perfectly cooked and the meat fell off the bones.  The only complaint was that there was 3 legs.  4 would have been easier to share.

For an entree I had a whole roasted trout on a bed of warm lentil salad for $20.  The trout was perfectly cooked and I was impressed that the fish was whole and deboned.  Caution for the squeamish the head was left on.  The fish was moist and the flavor was simple.  The lentil salad was a nice compliment to the fish.  The entrée was good but I think I have been spoiled by too much wild caught trout to fully appreciate this dish.

JC had a special for $22.  Now let me tell you when the server described the dish to JC,  he was intrigued about the combination of foie gras and blood sausage.  The dish was a pastry base with a house made blood sausage and foie gras melted over the top.  Foie gras is French for ‘fat liver’.  JC though about it then asked the server his opinion.  The server said that what people come for is the specials.  Everyone who try’s it loves it.  He then told JC that he was confident that he would like the dish.  With such confidence JC had to try it.

The server was right, JC thought it was absolutely amazing.  I tried a piece of the blood sausage and for coagulated blood it was very good.  JC was so happy he could have ordered another one.  Following the entrée we did not have that sense that we had over eaten.  Which allowed us enough room to share a dessert.

We shared the pear dacquoise for 7$  This was a light dessert made of layers of walnut meringue, whipped white chocolate ganache and pear mouse.  It was decadent but not overly heavy.  The dessert was gluten-free naturally which means it retained its integrity.  Braised pears and candied walnuts accompanied the dessert.  It was the perfect end to a perfect meal.

There was never mentioned of the birthday but I think that the service implied that they knew about the special occasion.  It was perfect, neither one of us likes to make a big deal about our birthdays.

Overall it was excellent, the prices are quite reasonable, and the service is something you would get at a $$$$ restaurant if you were lucky.  I am in agreement with JC I think this is my new favorite restaurant.

Skamania Lodge

Sunday November 6th

What a Feast!!!!! Don’t need to eat dinner tonight!!!!

Sunday was a beautiful fall day. A little on the cold side, but clear and sunny.  JC made the suggestion of going to Skamania lodge for brunch. I have never been.  JC said it was a real feast.  Let me tell you, I have not eaten that much in years.  No need for any further food that day, Brunch lasted until breakfast the next day!  The buffet was truly a feast with a carving station with salmon, prime rib and ham.  Stations included cook to order omelets and waffles.  The center portion of the buffet had the main courses including; seafood parmesan, Eggs Benedict, corn beef hash, potatoes, teriyaki steak, cheese blintzes, raviolis and a few other dishes that I cannot remember.  There was a salad station with about 6 different salads and some of the sweetest pineapple I have had in a long time.  There was a meat and cheese station and a pastries station that I wished I could have indulged in.  The dessert station had many desserts and a few that I tried including a blueberry creme brulee, a coconut flan and a pumpkin pie mousse.  Now, I do have to admit somewhere in all of this food I did get some wheat, most likely from the teriyaki steak and maybe the pumpkin dessert.

Where JC and I indulged, was at the seafood station.  There was smoked salmon, lox, mussels, peel and eat shrimp, and fresh cold crab legs and claws.  I know that JC had at least a crab and a half.  I had a whole crab.  It was fresh, sweet, and delicious.  While we gorged ourselves silly, they came by with all you can drink mimosas.  It was fantastic and all for the price of $30.90 a person with tax it came to $33.12 a person.  This may sound steep but when you consider that the crab alone would have been at least $25 this turns into a good deal.  There is a package that includes breakfast for two and a forest view room.  This package starts at $216 a night without taxes.

Yes, it is a long drive for a buffet, about an hour, but the day was beautiful and we got out-of-town.  I would suggest making reservations.  We waited about 45 minute for a table.  While we waited we each had a bloody Mary in the bar.  There were spicy and not really strong.  The price was ok at $8 a piece.  After the buffet we enjoyed the grounds and the view.

I would recommend the buffet to anyone who is gluten-free but I would not recommend it to a strict vegetarian.  There was slim pickings for the veggie lover.  This buffet was very heavy on protein.  Overall worth the trip and you can always book a room which I have not done yet.

Crave Gluten-free Bake Shop

This weekend I found a new bakery in Lake Oswego.  Located at 460 5th street, the bakery is on a nice quiet street, next to Safeway.  JC and I enjoyed two cupcakes. One was called ‘hot chocolate’.  It has a chocolate cake with a toasted marshmallow cream frosting.  This reminded me of a Hostess Cupcake but better.  The other cupcake was a strawberry vanilla cream.  It was a vanilla cake with vanilla cream center topped with strawberry cream frosting.  The cupcake was exceptional, because the strawberry cream was mild in flavor and not sickeningly sweet.

We liked the cupcakes so much, we went back, picked up four, and took them to my parents.  In addition to the strawberry vanilla cream, pumpkin pie which is a pumpkin cake with a cream cheese frosting was sampled.  This equally amazing cupcake was moist and not too heavy, just like the others.  The cupcakes were standard size, not oversized like some bakeries make.  The cost was on the steeper side at $3.50 for a classic flavor and $4 for specialty flavors.  There is an amazing 66 flavors to choose from .  These are not available all the time, but can be specially ordered.   A dozen cupcakes runs for $39 to $44 depending on the flavor.  There is another option, mini’s which would be great at a party and run $21 a dozen.

Cupcakes are not all that Crave offers; scones, brownies, cookies, doughnuts, rolls, bars, and cakes are available.  Cakes come in sizes up to 16 inches and can feed up to 112, and are customizable at an additional cost.  Compared to the cupcakes, the cake surely are better.  The only concern I would have is the price.  These cakes seem expensive, priced between $5.50 and $6.50 per person served.  This is considerably more expensive than Piece of Cake, in Sellwood.  Unfortunately, I have not priced many cakes, and though this seems high, it maybe in line with what other bakeries charge in the city.  I will have to investigate further.

The one thing that has really impressed me is the group of girls that where there on a Saturday morning.  They we all young and energetic.  The service was great and they were friendly and knowledgeable.  I have a good feeling about this bake shop, and would recommend people come check it out.  Business looks good, in the short time we were there, about 7 people came in and purchased products.

Crave is co-sponsoring a fundraiser for the Crohn’s and Colitis foundation of America.  The goal is to raise $30,000 dollars.  The event is going to be held at Bushwhackers Saloon at 8200 SW Tonka street, in Tualatin, Oregon. On Friday November 11th.  The time is from 7pm to 11pm and there should be good food, treats, dancing, and a raffle with prizes.  I unfortunately have to work until 1130pm that night.

I am impressed that Crave, open for less than 6 months, is actively participating in the community.  The fundraiser to support the Crohn’s and Colitis foundation is an excellent way to support the growing community of gluten-free. This cause does hit a little close to home because my niece and another friend have Crohn’s.  I see the impact the disease has made in there lives.   As a nurse that recovers patients from surgery, I see the the long-term affects of poorly managing the disease.  The Crohn’s and Colitis foundation offers great support  services to inflicted individuals and their support of research may some day lead to a cure.

Check them out on the web at http://www.cravebakeshop.com/

FALL 2011

What great color!!!

This was shot last Thursday on October 27th.  I love fall color.  I’m not sure if this is a better than usual fall show. It  maybe that my attention is focused on the colors.  As I have driven around the city, taken notice of all the colors, I suggest to you to appreciate the fall color this year.  I think it is quite beautiful this year and is peaking now.  In a week or two all the leaves will be off and the continuous rains will begin.

Spring into Fall

Early September

This is a shot of the creek that goes through Oswald West State Park.  At the beginning of September I decided to camp over night and wanted to stay at the park.  This is my favorite state park because of the ocean, old growth, and lighthouse.  One of my first pictures with my D300 was of the area around the park.

Attention: any one looking for an overnight campsite, the campgrounds are closed now.  That was a little disappointing but understandable.  The park is heavily used by surfers and it looks like they have strained the facilities in the park.

In the end, I got what I needed from the trip.  It was on  this trip that I decided to withdraw from school.

Spring into Fall

Computer is working for now

My temporary fix has allowed me to continue to post.  I have not loss sight of my vision for the website but alas work of that magnitude is hold.  Until then enjoy some of my pictures.

The maple turned this color during the spring.  I really enjoy the salmon pink against the blue sky.  I should visit this tree now and see what color it is.  This is taken at the Crystal Springs Garden next to Read College.
